On a beautiful summer afternoon, Br. James was strolling around our largest retirement facility when a frightening sight stopped him cold. He happened to be watching a fluffy, cotton candy cloud float across the brilliant blue sky when he saw a loose brick sticking out precariously from the roof’s parapet. He walked a little further around the building, still staring up at the low protective wall that outlines our facility’s entire roof, and spotted more protruding bricks, which looked as if they might fall to the ground – or worse, onto someone’s head – at any moment!
Br. James immediately alerted the retirement home director who quickly called me. After a brief discussion, we saw only two choices. We could issue hard hats to every elderly and disabled Brother or we could repair this dangerous situation NOW. The director and I were in full agreement. The repair project would begin ASAP.
Our director called in bids from masonry contractors, we made a choice, and work began quickly! Every loose brick was stabilized and a massive tuck-pointing project followed – so we could prevent further damage down the road. The total cost came to a whopping $103,000! Thankfully, we had $74,000 in our emergency building fund – but that left us $29,000 short.
Today I ask for your support. Please…help us raise the remaining $29,000 so we can close out our account with the masonry contractor.
If we had delayed the project for even one more day, who knows what might have happened. Falling bricks conjures up too many spine-chilling outcomes to imagine. And because our Brothers in this facility are elderly – many disabled – expecting them to sprint out of danger’s way just wasn’t likely.
I pray that you support our decision to begin the masonry work ASAP.
While the Brothers’ safety is always our No. 1 Top Priority, the masonry contractor did give us a very valuable lesson in home maintenance – which brought to light a second reason to repair every wobbly brick and tuck-point every necessary square inch.
It turns out that parapet walls help protect a roof from harsh winter winds – something that is more important when a roof is several stories high, where winds are often strongest. Since our retirement home stands four stories tall, pinching nickels to lower our parapet repair cost wasn’t a smart decision. Saving money today could very well mean expensive roof repairs down the road!
There you have it. The full story – and why we very much need your help to raise the remaining $29,000 to cover our parapet repair experience.
Can I count on your support?
Rest assured that whatever amount you can afford – whether $15 or $150 – your gift will make a difference. Did you notice the two nickels tucked in with my note? For just a moment, think of the coins as bricks. One brick is just a brick. No big deal. But two bricks are the start of a stack. Add 100 bricks, and you’ve built a wall. That’s how we look at your support. Nickel by nickel, every bit of support keeps increasing our total – until we have the $29,000 needed.
And as soon as your gift arrives, we’ll want to thank you in a very special way. So please remember to write your prayer intentions on the enclosed donation response slip and return it to me along with your support. As we thank God for your gift, we’ll include your intentions in our prayers, for you and your loved ones.
Of course, we also pray that you’re enjoying a glorious autumn. Butter-colored chrysanthemums, rich burgundy red leaves, and gloriously orange pumpkins – a picture perfect example of God’s artistry. Celebrate the season with joy!
God bless you for your kindness,
Br. Hugh P. Turley, F.M.S.
