Br. Martin Healy, FMS

Brother Martin Healy, FMS, a member of the Marist Brothers of the Schools for 71 years, died on October 10, 2018 at Cabrini Nursing Home in Dobbs Ferry, New York. He was 89 years old.

Brother Martin was born in New York City. He attended the Marist Brothers Juniorate in Esopus, New York from 1943 until 1946 before becoming a Postulant with the Marist Brothers in 1946 and entering the Marist Brothers Novitiate in Poughkeepsie in 1947. He professed first vows in 1948, final vows in 1953, and the vow of stability in 1965.

After completing his religious and academic studies at Marist College (Poughkeepsie, New York), Br. Martin began his ministry serving as a teacher and coach at St. Ann’s Academy in New York City from 1951 until 1956. He also served as a teacher at St. Helena High School, Bronx, NY(1956-58) while working on his Masters degree in Theology which he earned from St. John’s University in 1958. Br. Martin spent time working at Our Lady of Lourdes High School, Poughkeepsie, NY (1958-63), St. Agnes High School, New York, NY(1964-67), Cardinal Hayes High School, Bronx, NY (1967-69), Roselle Catholic High School (1970 – 79), Lacordaire Academy, Upper Montclair, NJ (1979-81), and Academy of St. Elizabeth,  Convent Station, NJ (1981-89). He also served as chaplain at Roselle Catholic High School in NJ (1990-2006).

Brother Martin retired to the Marist Brothers community in Roselle, New Jersey in 2006 and he continued to volunteer as a Eucharistic Minister at local hospitals. He remained there until 2017 when he moved for medical reasons to Champagnat Hall in Bronx, New York.

Br. Martin was the son of Martin and Margaret (Green) Healy. He is survived by his brother, Patrick, his two sisters, Ann and Sister Angelus Healy, OP as well as his many nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews as well as by his Marist Brothers of the Province of the United States.
