Dear Friends,
During a recent visit to our 3-story Marist Brothers’ retirement facility – home to several elderly Brothers, ages 77 to 88 – I pressed the elevator button so I could head up to the third floor. That’s where Br. Nathan’s bedroom is, and I wanted to sit with him for a bit since he wasn’t feeling well.

I waited for the elevator door to open but nothing happened. Soon I learned that the elevator was out of order. It had been stuck on the ground floor for several days.
When the elevator first stopped working, a repair service came in – and the news was shocking. The 25-year old elevator needed $41,845 in repairs. Extensive and complex updates included a new motor, new wiring, new cables, new safety features, and intricate new electrical renovations. Essentially, the elevator needed a total overhaul!
Despite the exorbitant and unexpected cost, we signed off on all repairs. What else could we do? The Brothers’ Community Room is on the third floor, their dining room is on the second floor, and bedrooms are on the top two levels.
Without an elevator, our elderly and disabled Brothers needed to climb the stairs – which was seriously dangerous!
I hope you understand how important the elevator is – and why we worked so fast to get it up and running. The only remaining problem we face is the $41,845 invoice. Your gift will be a blessing as we continue to care for our elderly and disabled Brothers.
Every gift makes a difference – and will mean so much to so many. We pray that you will send your donation today!
I cannot stress enough how much every gift matters. Think about the nickels I’m sending with my note. They may not be worth much alone, but after adding nickels from every Marist Brothers’ friend, the total grows…and quickly. Please keep our Brothers in your heart this Christmas season and send a gift today. We will be so grateful.
My Brothers will keep you in their hearts as well, and they asked me to remind you about the enclosed prayer intention slip. Take a moment to write your prayer intentions and send the slip with your donation. We will be honored to include your special intentions in our Christmas devotions. This is something we look forward to doing for you, so don’t forget to fill out the slip!
In the meantime, I hope you are looking forward to a Merry Christmas season – surrounded by dear family and friends as you rejoice in the glories of Christ’s birth.
