Marist communities across the Philippines are facing a long road to recovery after a powerful earthquake struck the region on June 8, causing widespread destruction in General
Santos City and throughout Sarangani Province.
Several Marist schools, communities, and family homes sustained significant damage as the earthquake claimed dozens of lives and displaced many families. While no Marists were among those who lost their lives, many members of the Marist family have been directly affected and are now working to rebuild their homes, schools, and communities.
The Philippines holds a special place in the history of the Marist Brothers USA Province. In 1948, four American Marist Brothers, including Br. Joe Teston, helped establish the Marist presence in the country. Over the decades, many Brothers from the United States served as missionaries in the Philippines, helping to build and strengthen the vibrant Marist communities that continue to accompany young people today.
The bonds formed through those years of shared mission remain strong. Marists throughout the United States continue to maintain close relationships with Brothers, educators, students, and families in the Philippines, making this tragedy especially personal for many members of the Province.
USA Provincial Br. Dan O'Riordan has invited the Marist family to keep all those affected in their prayers as recovery efforts continue.
"We stand in solidarity with our brothers and sisters in the Philippines during this difficult time," Br. Dan said. "We pray for all those who have lost loved ones, homes, and livelihoods, and for the strength and hope needed to rebuild."
