Cultural All Nighter

To encourage inclusivity and highlight how diversity can allow and empower people to live authentically, Molloy hosted its first cultural retreat, "A Night Around the World" last month. This retreat invited juniors and seniors - of which most are members of one of the nine different cultural clubs at the school - to come together for a night of celebration of the community's diversity. The students pulled an all-nighter, spending 7pm - 7am participating in various activities, such as listening to student leaders speak about their cultural experiences and items significant to those cultures, as well as presentations from faculty. Ms. Mary Edward shared how she celebrates her Coptic and Egyptian culture, and school president Richard Karsten discussed Marist hospitality through food. Students participated in activities that engaged different cultural backgrounds, such as a drumming session with music teacher Mr. Daniel Jones, henna, origami, painting, and the universal game of soccer. Mr. Dan O’Rielly led the students in Taize prayer. Finally, the students were able to taste an array of food from various parts of the world for a midnight snack. The night reached its overall goal - encouraging inclusivity and inspiring others to do the same.
