Earlier this week, our Brothers at Champagnat Hall in the Bronx continued a beautiful Valentine’s Day tradition that has quietly grown over the years. Since 2018, they have shared a special bond with the children of Mercy Center’s After School program — a simple but powerful connection rooted in kindness  prayer, and intergenerational friendship.

On February 12, the children received a special delivery of cupcakes, baked and carefully decorated by our elderly Brothers. Br. Steve Milan helped ensure the treats were hand-delivered, continuing a tradition that has become a source of joy for both the children and the Brothers themselves. What may seem like a small gesture carries deep meaning — a reminder to the children that they are remembered, valued, and loved.

This outreach is not limited to Valentine’s Day. At Christmas, Easter, and other moments throughout the year, the Brothers prepare cookies, goodie bags, and sweet surprises. Even in their later years — and even when they are not always able to go out physically — they remain deeply committed to our Marist mission of making Jesus known and loved, especially among young people.

Reflecting on the experience, Br. Donald Richard Loiselle, FMS shared, “Whenever I am asked to participate in a project for Mercy Center I'm happy to do so. Doing things for young people is satisfying for any adult, but especially for someone whose vocation and life's work has been devoted to young people.

Br. Paul Forgues expressed similar gratitude: “Not having the opportunity to go out and help others, I am grateful to have the opportunity to show my love and concern for the children at Mercy Center when we stuff goodie bags or provide treats… I can just imagine the eyes of the young children as they receive the cupcakes that we decorated. Thanks to all at Mercy Center for your dedication — be assured of my prayers.

For Br. Christopher Shannon, the joy is mutual: “It was such a joy to share in making the cupcakes knowing the children at Mercy Center would have a joyous time on Valentine's Day. This was my third time doing a project for Mercy Center. It gives all of us good feelings knowing that the children will have a great time ‘partying’ for St. Valentine’s Day.

The children have even sent thank-you videos back to Champagnat Hall — small but powerful reminders that fraternity knows no age and that the Marist spirit continues to flourish across generations.

We are deeply grateful for the witness of our elderly Brothers, whose prayerful presence and generous hearts continue to nurture young lives in quiet, beautiful ways.
