Brother Joseph P. Scanlon, FMS died peacefully on Wednesday, December 14, 2022 at the Morningside Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Bronx, New York. He was two weeks shy of his 78th birthday and in his 58th year of Marist religious life.

Brother Joseph was born on December 27, 1944 in New York City. He was the son of the late Thomas and Catherine Hourihan Scanlon. On September 12, 1963, he entered the Marist Brothers Novitiate in Esopus, New York. He received the Marist habit in 1964 and professed first vows on August 15, 1965. After his novitiate, he went to the Marist Brothers Scholasticate at Marist College in Poughkeepsie, NY where he graduated with a BA in Social Studies in 1968. He received an MAT degree in Religion and History from St. Mary’s University, Winona, Minnesota in 1974.

From 1968 until 1976 he taught history and religion at St Joseph Academy in Brownsville, Texas. During this time, he made his final profession of vows in 1973. From 1976 to 1994 we was a social studies and religion teacher at John A. Coleman High School in Hurley, New York. He made his second novitiate renewal in Manziana, Italy in 1995 and upon return to the USA he went back to St. Joseph Academy in Brownsville where he continued to teach religion and history until 2005. Due to medical reasons, he was assigned to the Marist Brothers Community on 91st Street in Manhattan and the following year to Champagnat Hall in the Bronx where he lived until recently.

In addition to his parents, Brother Joseph was predeceased by a brother, Thomas Scanlon. He is survived by his sister, Sister Jane-Ann Scanlon, CND, his sister-in-law, Jane Scanlon, nieces, a nephew and his Marist Brothers.
