Dear Friends,
Last month I received a phone call from Br. Mike, who directs one of our smaller retirement homes, and he explained that a few roof shingles had come loose. “It won’t cost much,” he assured me. “All we need are a few minor repairs and the roof will be good as new.”
But even as Br. Mike reassured me, all I could hear were warning bells. Roof issues are rarely “minor” and loose shingles usually indicate deeper problems.
Sure enough! Our roofing contractor confirmed that nailing down loose asphalt tiles wasn’t an option this time. Because the roof was almost 20 years old, we needed to tear off every last shingle, install a brand new roof, and what’s more, we need everything watertight before spring’s harsh rains hit.
The cost to complete the project will set us back $8,320! We didn’t plan on a new roof for this retirement home this year, and we don’t have an extra $8,320 in our budget.
However, the cost to postpone this project could cost ten times more. If a downpour causes the roof to leak, there may be damage to the Brothers’ home. We could be facing ruined walls, ceilings, and floors.
As Easter approaches, I ask for your support. Whatever you can afford – whether a gift of $15 or $25 – will be an enormous help and greatly appreciated.
I know I can count on your loyal, caring dedication to my elderly and disabled Brothers, but until your gift arrives, I can’t rest easy. I’m so worried about covering this cost!
Please send your donation today. With spring’s rainy season only weeks away, time is of the essence!
Perhaps you’re thinking that $8,320 is a little steep to re-roof a smaller, ranch-style retirement home with only six bedrooms. As our roofing contractor explained, ranch homes may have less interior square footage than a two-story home, but single-level dwellings typically have more expansive roofs.
It makes perfect sense, but still…we could sure use your help to cover this unexpected cost.
During this Lenten season, as we look forward to Easter and renewing our commitment to our risen Lord Jesus Christ, I have faith that you will help us! As a token of my appreciation, I’m enclosing a special Easter prayer card. Can’t you just imagine the lily’s heavenly scent?
I also enclosed a nickel with my letter. On its own, the coin isn’t worth much. But as you add more nickels, the total keeps increasing! In the same way, if all of our friends send a donation, in whatever amount that’s comfortable, we will soon have the $8,320 to replace our Brothers’ roof!
As soon as your gift arrives, every Marist Brother will want to show his appreciation. So please, remember to write your prayer intentions on the enclosed response slip and return it along with your support. We look forward to including your prayer intentions during our special Easter Mass in your honor.
I thank you again so very much for your continued friendship. And I especially want to wish you a glorious Easter. May your spirit rejoice as you celebrate the miracle of renewed life, faith, and love for Our Lord Jesus Christ.
God bless you for caring,
Br. Hugh P. Turley, F.M.S.
